Proper construction begins with selecting a level, stable location. The area is cleared of grass, roots, and debris. The ground is then leveled to ensure structural stability. A sand or stone dust base is installed and compacted to create a smooth foundation.
Why It Matters:
A perfectly level base prevents structural stress, wall shifting, and premature liner wear.
A bottom track (also called a bottom rail system) is laid out in the exact shape of the pool—round or oval. Vertical uprights and supports are positioned according to manufacturer specifications.
Key components include:
The pool wall—typically made of rolled, galvanized steel or resin-coated steel—is carefully unrolled into the bottom track. The ends are bolted together to form a continuous circle or oval structure.
For oval pools, additional side supports are installed to manage outward water pressure.
Once the wall is secure, a protective wall foam or coving may be added to create a smooth interior surface. The vinyl liner is then carefully positioned and secured to the top of the wall using a bead receiver or overlap method.
Air is vacuumed out behind the liner during installation to eliminate wrinkles before the pool is filled with water.
After the liner is set and the pool begins filling, top rails and caps are installed to secure the structure. Skimmer and return openings are cut into the wall once the water reaches the appropriate level.
The filtration system, pump, and ladder are then installed to complete the setup.
How can I determine what size pool fits my yard best?
You should measure the area/space that you have by both length and width. With those dimensions, you should be able to figure out what would fit the best.
Keep in mind any additional structures that you want in the area, so you allow enough space to create your dream yard. Ask yourself, do I want a deck around my pool? A pool house for storage of chemicals, floats, etc.? If so, how big would these structures be?
Is an oval or round above-ground pool better?
Just like each backyard is unique, each pool is, too! Some spaces can fit either an oval or round above-ground pool, but which is best for your space comes down to your preference and budget.
Oval-shaped above-ground pools fit in spaces with more narrow widths and longer lengths whereas round above-ground pool take up more area, in general.
Which gives more water or swim space—an oval or round above-ground pool?
Round above-ground pools typically give you more water since they cover a broader area. Ovals usually supply less due to their more narrow length.
How long will an above-ground pool last?
Like anything, product quality depends on a variety of elements. The brand, chosen coatings, installation, and skill of the company installing it all work together to determine the longevity of your above-ground pool.

What should I expect after an above-ground pool installation?
During the install, excavating the site and prepping the land to level the area will create a dirt pile that is a mixture of sod and dirt. Typically, installers do not haul away that excess dirt, but it can be arranged once the pool is properly backfilled. Backfilling the pool aims to hide the bottom rail and prevent washout from under the pool, which can occur with hard rains or extended rail exposure. Due to these circumstances, backfilling is not done until the water in the pool is at the correct level.
